How to Personalize Your Own Snowflake Leotards

Painting decorations on recital and costume leotards at home is a cost-effective way to create an embellished garment while saving money. Bottled fabric paint dries in a thick mass, cannot accommodate stretching, and will ultimately fall off the leotard altogether. Avoid this potential pitfall by using fabric spray paint to decorate the garment. If you cannot find fabric paint in a spray can, select a spray paint that is safe for direct human contact. With the appropriate paint, you can fashion lasting decorations like snowflakes on a full wardrobe of leotards.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your work area with newspapers.

    • 2

Lay the leotard on the paper-covered surface.

    • 3

Cut or tear a piece of wax paper from the roll. Fold the paper so that it is the same width as the leotard. Insert the wax paper in the leotard, to keep paint from seeping through the material onto the backside.

    • 4

Shake the can of spray paint according to the manufacturer's instructions, to prepare it for application.

    • 5

Apply your snowflake template to the leotard. If using a snowflake stencil, hold it against the garment; if using snowflake stickers, affix them to the fabric. Using a stencil will allow you to paint a snowflake. Painting over stickers will allow you to paint around a snowflake, leaving the snowflake itself unpainted.

    • 6

Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the fabric. Aim the nozzle toward the target area. Apply a coat of paint. Apply as little paint as necessary to make the layer opaque.

    • 7

Set the can aside. Lift the stencil off the leotard and set it aside, if you used a stencil. Follow the manufacturer's instruction to determine drying time. Peel-off the snowflake stickers after the paint dries, if you used stickers as a template.

    • 8

Turn the leotard over and paint the reverse side, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • In the absence of fabric spray paint, use a spray paint that is formulated for use on an object that receives prolonged, direct human contact, like dishes or wearable accessories.
