How to Make an Adult-Size Pirate Hat
When we think of the clothing pirates used to wear, Captain Jack Sparrow and other Hollywood pirate characters often come to mind. One of the quintessential elements of this pirate costume is the tricornered hat or tricorn. Dressing up as a pirate is not just for kids -- an adult can make his own tricorn for instant recognition as a pirate in his costume. Use an adult-size, wide-brimmed black hat made of pliable materials, such as felt or foam, along with a few basic craft supplies to create the pirate hat.
Things You'll Need

1
Turn the hat upside down and arrange a length of decorative cording along the outer circumference of the hat brim. Hot-glue the cording into place and allow the glue to dry overnight.
-
2
Pull up the back edge of the brim to meet the crown. Hand-sew the edge of the brim into place on the crown, using several stitches to make sure it is secure.

3
Fold up the brim of the hat to meet the crown in two additional places, forming the second and third sides of the hat's triangle shape. Adjust the edges of the brim along the crown, making sure the sides of the triangle are equal in size before sewing. Secure each edge to the crown with a needle and thread.

Tips & Warnings
Select a sturdy needle for sewing the felt or foam.
Choose decorative cording in a color that will stand out against the black hat, such as white, red or gold.
Tie a long red scarf or bandana on your head to wear underneath the hat for an authentic pirate look.
Avoid skin contact with the hot glue and unplug the gun after use.
