How to Make Tulle Pompoms

Use colorful tulle to make decorative pompoms.

Tulle pompoms are whimsical handmade decorations with a feminine flair. A tulle pompom is a doughnut-shaped ring of tulle fabric trimmed around the edges so the fabric poofs out. Tie strings around the middle of your tulle pompoms and hang them from different heights to create fairy-tale wedding or baby shower decorations. Make tulle pompoms inexpensively by watching for sales on bolt fabric in craft stores. A yard of fabric goes a long way when making tulle pompoms.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace around the mouth of a drinking glass or jar on a piece of cardboard twice. Cut out both circles with a craft knife.

    • 2

Trace around a quarter in the center of each circle. Cut the circles out with the craft knife.

    • 3

Fold 1 yard of tulle lengthwise as many times as necessary to make a long strip. The strip should be approximately 2 inches wide.

    • 4

Hold the two cardboard circles together. Insert one end of the rolled-up tulle through the circle and pull all but 2 inches of the tulle through. Hold the 2-inch tail level with the top of the cardboard circles.

    • 5

Wrap the tulle all the way around the circles, pulling the strand through the center each time. The cardboard circles will look like a tulle doughnut when you're done.

    • 6

Slip the bottom blade of a pair of scissors under the tulle and between the two circles. Cut all the way around the outside edge so that the tulle poofs out of the hole on both sides and you can see the cardboard.

    • 7

Slip a 6-inch piece of ribbon between the two circles. Tie it around the tulle, gathering the tulle into a pompom. Slip the circles off the sides of the pompom and fluff it around the ribbon. Use the ribbon tails to hang the pompom.
