How to Sew a T-Shirt to a Skirt

How to Sew a T-Shirt to a Skirt thumbnail
Add a sequined skirt to a close-fitting T-shirt.

Make a summer dress from a close-fitting T-shirt and a simple fabric skirt. Stretchy fabric shirts and skirts are easy to join because you do not have to adjust the size of either to accommodate the widest part of your hips. Simply slide the skirt beneath the shirt's hem and attach with a simple stitch. Make the T-shirt dress from coordinating shirts and skirts for a simple creation, or use contrasting colors and fabrics to make a dress that really stands out.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the skirt on your work surface inside out. Open the stitches along the waistline with a stitch ripper.

    • 2

Turn the T-shirt inside out and lay it on your work surface.

    • 3

Slide the waist of the skirt over top of the hem of the shirt. Let the skirt fabric overlap the T-shirt hem by about 1/2-inch.

    • 4

Insert straight pins all the way around the waistline to join the skirt to the shirt.

    • 5

Sew a running stitch all the way around and then remove the straight pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • When adding a loose-fitting skirt to a close-fitting T-shirt, undo the stitches along the waist line of the skirt. Sew a gathering stitch along the skirt's waistline and pull on the thread to gather the skirt to the circumference of the T-shirt hem.

  • Make a brand new skirt to attach to the T-shirt. Measure around your waist and cut a piece of fabric twice your waist circumference by the length you would like the skirt. Join the side seam and sew a gathering stitch all the way around one long edge. Tug on the gathered edge to make it the same circumference as your T-shirt hem and sew the gathered edge to the skirt.
