Clothing racks can be convenient, although they tend to gather dust.

Clothing and garment racks are handy, portable ways to hang up clothes so they don't wrinkle. Covering a clothing rack keeps the hanging items from gathering dirt and dust while not in use. A clothing rack cover can be made out of almost any material, from standard fabric to sheet plastic to a shower curtain. These options make the rack less an eyesore and more a personal and decorative part of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each dimension of the clothing rack: height, length and width. It's best to measure the width with clothing already hanging on it as the rack itself is very thin. Use the tape measure, then write down the dimensions and include some extra room for clothing to fit under the cover. It may help to draw a picture of the rack as a cube with the measurements placed on each side.

    • 2

Decide where to place the opening of the cover. Consider how the rack is usually kept in the room: Is it up against a wall or accessible from all sides? Place the opening at the side where clothes are most commonly removed from the rack.

    • 3

Cut five lengths of material to the measured dimension. These pieces will be for the two sides, a front, a back and a top. You may also want to cut the top and the back pieces as one piece, depending on the type and size of the chosen material.

    • 4

Sew the two sides, the front and the back to the top piece. In the case of a single top and back piece, you'll need to sew the side pieces to the material for the top of the cover.

    • 5

Attach the two pieces to the back piece so it creates the box-like shape. For only one opening, sew the front piece to one of the sides. For two openings, leave the sides of the front piece unsewn so the cover hangs freely, attached only at the top.

    • 6

Place the cover onto the clothing rack so it hangs easily and the clothes are still accessible.
