How to Make an Origami Secret Box

An origami secret box is a small storage box you can use to store tiny treasures or package a small gift. It is cuboid in shape, with two flaps that open on the top surface. You can make an origami secret box from a single A4 sheet of paper.

Fold the sheet of paper into thirds. Hold the paper so the longer edges run horizontally. Fold the left vertical edge into the center so the edge splits the remaining two-thirds of the page in half. Fold the right vertical edge into the middle so the edge matches up with the opposite side and the fold is at the same position as the opposite edge. You can fold both edges in at the same time, if you wish. Flatten the page out and go over both creases.

Open the page out so the left and right creases separate it into three long rectangles. Fold the left side back into the middle so the edge touches the right crease. Fold it back on itself so the long rectangle is split vertically and the edge is in line with the left crease. Repeat the process with the right-hand side.

Turn the page over so the folds you just made are face down. Fold all four corners over, forming right-angled triangles with the right angles coming into the center. Only fold one layer of paper over so you can still see the original rectangle shape underneath the corners you've folded over.

Unfold the triangles you just folded down. Look inside the top edge of the long rectangle. Notice that the triangles you just folded made two creases on the page. Push the outer edges of each inside so you form the same shape as before except with the triangles folded on the inside. Fold the front section (with the points at either end) in half, bringing the left edge over to meet the right. Take the back flap and fold it out to the left so you're left with a bungalow shape. Turn it so that the "roof" is at the top.

Fold the front flaps of the left and right sides in so that the edges meet in the center. Turn the paper over and fold the left and right edges into the center. Fold the front flap of the bottom edge up to the top and the back flap up to the top but on the back side. Grab both the front and back flaps you just folded over and spread the shape apart. You have a boat shape with a distinctive fold in the middle. Push this fold down so it sits flat and forms the bottom of the box.

Flatten the points at the top and bottom to form the remainder of the box. Fold these points into the center if they don't keep their shape at first. The two rectangular flaps are the lid of your box, and they should meet in the middle.
