Add length to a scarf with a decorative fringe.

Adding a fringe to a knitted scarf brings additional personality to the piece. Whether you use the same yarn as in the body of the scarf or use a coordinating or contrasting color, the fringe will serve as a decorative element to make the scarf flow and look longer. Although there are many methods for fringing, this method is very easy and should take less than an hour to complete the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • 5-inch wide book
  • Scissors
  • Medium-size crochet hook

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap yarn around a 5-inch wide book five times. Cut all of the wrapped yarn at one end resulting in five lengths of yarn measuring slightly longer than 10 inches.

    • 2

Set aside one piece of the cut yarn. Using a medium-sized crochet hook, pull four pieces of the yarn halfway through a stitch along the edge of the knitted scarf. Fold the yarn pieces in half at the edge of the scarf, lining up the cut edges. One-half inch from the fold, tightly wrap the remaining piece of yarn around the fringe and tie with a tight knot.

    • 3

Attach fringe, evenly spaced apart, along the edge of the scarf. Trim the fringe as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decrease or increase the number of strands according to the desired fullness for your fringe.

  • Tie beads or charms to the fringes for additional decoration.

  • Start with longer lengths of yarn, even if you think you may want a shorter fringe. You can always trim the fringe shorter, if desired. However, you can't add back yarn once you cut it too short.
