How to Make a Hatsune Miku Costume
Hatsune Miku is a Yamaha-operated software program that lets users type in lyrics and a melody for an original song synthesis. The representative image for this program is a spunky vixen complete with a short dress and long blue hair. She is a 16-year-old character with a specific fashion sense that uses a gray and green color palette. 1
Place a gray halter top on your work surface. The top should be a metallic color, similar to slate. Cut out fabric in a matching color. Use this fabric to sew a collar to the top of the halter. Cut an inverted V shape in the bottom middle of the shirt.
-
2
Sew blue-green stitching around the bottom of the top. Use a straight line stitch to cover the seam around the inverted "V" shape and the bottom edge of the shirt.
-
-
3
Tie a blue-green necktie around the shirt's collar as close to your neck as is comfortable.
-
4
Place a gray skirt on your work surface that is a couple of shades darker than the top. Spray glitter on the skirt. Measure the width of the bottom hem of the skirt.
-
5
Cut 1-inch-wide blue-green ribbon to the measurement of the skirt. Use a hot glue gun or a sewing machine to attach the blue-green ribbon to the bottom of the skirt.
-
6
Cut two more pieces of blue-green ribbon, one piece 6 inches long and the other 3 inches long. Glue the 3-inch strip of ribbon to the inside bottom edge of the shirt. Glue the 6-inch strip to the inside center edge of the skirt. Both strips of ribbon should be visible and flow from the costume.
-
7
Stamp "01" on your left arm. The stamp should be red and just below the left shoulder.
-
8
Craft arm gauntlets with thick cardboard tubes. Tubes should be long to cover the majority of the arm, so use long tubes such as wrapping paper tubes or poster tubes. Spray paint the cardboard tubes gray. The color doesn't need to be consistent as Miku's arm gauntlets feature a variety of gray tones. Let dry.
-
9
Unwind the tubes and wrap the cardboard around your arms. Tape the cardboard so that it is tighter at the top of the arm and flares out near the bottom.
-
10
Add details to the outfit. Cut out cardboard pieces to make lapels for your tie and buttons for your arm gauntlet.
-
11
Put on a large blue-green wig and style your hair. Bangs should be cropped in the front and other strands of hair should frame your face. Two long ponytails should start at the top of your head and flow down. Use purple triangular hair clips to keep the ponytails in place.
-
12
Put on tall, black lace-up boots. The boots should stop just a few inches short of the bottom of the skirt's hem.
