How to Make an "F" for a Friendship Bracelet
Friendship bracelets are made by tying strings of embroidery floss together in knots to create different patterns like letters, stripes and polka dots. Make an "F" shape on your friendship bracelet by tying two different colors of string in a pattern.
Things You'll Need
- 8 embroidery floss strings, letter color
- 1 embroidery floss string, background color
- Large safety pin

1
Hold the nine pieces of embroidery floss together and tie them together at one end in a simple knot. Pin the knot to your pants with a large safety pin.
-
2
Spread out the nine strings, and place the background color string as the first one on the left.
-
-
3
Pick up the background color string. Make a forward knot with the string by placing the background string over the first string to the right to make a "4" shape. Pass the background color string under the right thread and pull up. Make another "4" shape with the background color string, pass it under the right thread and pull up to make a forward right double half-hitch knot.
-
4
Tie the background color string to the other seven strings in a forward double half-hitch knot to make the first row of knots of the friendship bracelet.
-
5
The background string is now on the right side. Pick up the background string and place it over the first string to the left to make a "4" shape. Pass the background string under the left thread and pull up. Make another "4" shape, pass it under the left thread and pull up on the string to make a forward left double half-hitch knot. Make another forward left double half-hitch knot with the next string to the left.
-
6
Make a forward left half-hitch knot with the background string on the third string to the left. Pick up the fourth string from the right, a letter color string, and tie a forward right half-hitch knot over the background string half-hitch knot on the third string.
-
7
Make a forward left half-hitch knot with the background string, and tie a forward right half-hitch knot over the background string knot for the next three letter-color strings going from right to left. Tie the last string in a left forward half-hitch knot. The top "arm" of the "F" should now be showing on your bracelet.
-
8
Make a forward right half-hitch knot with the first string to the right and the background string. Make a forward right half-hitch knot on the second string with the background string, then tie a forward left half-hitch knot over it with the letter string directly to the right. Tie the background string onto the other seven letter color strings. Repeat this pattern with the next row by tying them in the opposite order so that you have a vertical row of two letter knots on the third string.
-
9
Tie a forward right half-hitch knot on the second string with the background color. Tie a forward right half-hitch knot on the third string with the background color, then tie a forward left half-hitch knot over the knot with the fourth letter color string (string to the right of the third string). Tie the next two knots the same way with the right letter color string tied over the background string to make the shorter leg of the "F" shape. Tie the last three knots in a forward right half-hitch knot with the background color.
-
10
Make the bottom of the "F" shape by tying the next four rows of knots in the following pattern. (Remember to reverse from forward right to forward left when you go to start the next row.) Tie a forward right half-hitch knot with the background string on the string to the right. Tie a forward right half-right knot on the fourth string, the cover it with a forward left half-hitch knot tied with the string directly to the right of the third string. Tie the next five knots in a forward right half-hitch knot with the background color.
-
11
Tie the last row of knots in a forward right half-hitch knot with the background color to finish making the "F" on your friendship bracelet.
