How to Make Highlighter Bottles

The ink used in highlighter marking pens reacts to black light by glowing brightly. Use this trait to make water black-light reactive. Fill vases and clear glass bottles with the glowing water as a decoration. Empty alcohol bottles look particularly attractive when lit. Under the black light, the water will glow the color of the highlighter pen you use.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the tip from the end of a highlighter pen. Cut the pen from the tip to the end with a utility knife, and pry the plastic open. Remove the ink tube inside.

    • 2

Pour 1 liter of water into a bowl, and add the ink tube.

    • 3

Allow the ink tube to soak until the fibers inside appear faded. This may take from 15 minutes to an hour. Remove the tube.

    • 4

Pour the water into the clear bottle. Place it in front of the black light, and turn on the light. The glow will not fade as long as the water is exposed to the black light.
