How to Make a Scribe Marker

A scribe marker is an instrument that is used to write, etch or draw on metal. The end of the scribe is pointed and sharp. Pull a scribe marker over metal by hand or with a machine to create a design. Make a homemade scribe marker from a rat tail file. Use this type of scribe marker with your hands to create lines and designs on a metal surface. Allow approximately 30 minutes to complete the process.

Instructions

Put on the safety glasses. Turn on the bench grinder.

    • 2

Grind the rat tail file surface from the pointed end of the file up the shaft approximately 3 inches. Taper the grinding so the end of the file becomes very sharp and pointed.

Touch the tip of the file to the grinding wheel lightly to remove the needle-like point and to create a smooth rounded surface. The scribe is sharp but not as sharp as a needle.
