How to Make Scarves Less Scratchy thumbnail
Reduce scratchiness in wool scarves with glycerin.

The scratchy fibers in scarves, especially wool, aggravate the skin resulting in an itchy and uncomfortable feeling around the neck. The scratchy fabric requires a softening technique that relaxes the fibers and makes them less harsh to the skin's surface. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a sink with lukewarm water. Add 2 tbsp. of glycerin to the water. Pour an additional tbsp. if washing more than two scarves at a time. Swish the water with your hand to disburse the glycerin.

    • 2

Place the scarves into the water and move them through the liquid. Pick the scarves up out of the water and down into it again, allowing the glycerin to touch all areas of the fabric. Let the scarves soak in the glycerin for 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 3

Empty the water from the sink. Gently squeeze the water from the scarves. Avoid wringing the scarves so you don't stretch the fabric.

    • 4

Lay the scarves flat over a hard surface, such as a table or counter, to dry. Flip over the scarves after one hour so that the underneath sides dry before storing the scarves away.
