Exposure to saltwater and sun give surfer-girl hair a more rugged look.

Surfer-girl hair is a fun and fashionable summertime look, and, with a little know-how, the cut is relatively simple to achieve. The surfer-girl cut tends to be long and layered, making it easy to manage both in the water and out. Though true surfer-girl hair is often achieved through exposing hair to sun and saltwater for extended periods, similar results can be attained at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the drape cloth or towel over the shoulders to protect clothing from falling hair. Spritz hair with water until wet, but not soaked, paying extra attention to the ends.

    • 2

Cut the bangs of the hair so they fall to the cheekbone or lower, depending on desired overall length.

    • 3

Layer the hair on the sides of the face so it gradually tapers to the shoulders or longer. This can be done by combing the sides forward and cutting at a 45-degree angle toward the shoulders.

    • 4

Layer the rest of the hair by holding it outward from the head in 2-inch sections at a 45-degree angle and cutting.

    • 5

Apply texturizing pomade, gel or mousse throughout the hair and blow dry. For surfer-girl waves, leave hair damp and braid tightly. When hair is completely dry, remove the braids and tousle hair for a fun, wavy look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding light blonde highlights to the hair will give it more of a surfer-girl look. This also can be achieved by adding lightening products or lemon juice to stands of hair and exposing the hair to the sun for a few hours. A saltwater solution also will create highlighting effects when applied to hair and exposed to sunlight.
