How to Make a Twin Sheet With a Drawstring

Make a drawstring twin sheet from a flat twin sheet.

A drawstring twin bed sheet replaces the fitted sheet on a twin bed. The drawstring acts like the elastic on a fitted sheet. The use of the drawstring ensures that the bottom sheet will stay in place on a mattress up to 18 inches thick. Finding material wide enough to make a solid drawstring twin sheet is difficult, but there is an easy fix to the situation. Use a flat twin sheet as the foundation. The width and length of the flat twin sheet is large enough to add a casing for the drawstring. Set aside 30 minutes to complete the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the flat twin sheet on a flat surface so the back side of the sheet is facing up. Draw a 1-inch square in the four corners with a disappearing sewing marker. Cut the 1-inch squares from the fabric.

    • 2

Zigzag the cut edges on the four 1-inch cutouts from the sheet corners with the widest zigzag on the sewing machine.

    • 3

Place the flat twin sheet on a flat surface so that the back side of the sheet is facing up. Fold each edge toward the center 3/4 inch. Pin the folded edge to the main body of the sheet as you go.

    • 4

Sew a 5/8-inch seam along the four edges of the twin sheet. This creates a casing for the drawstring.

    • 5

Tie a knot 1/2-inch from both ends of the 9 1/2 yards of cording. Secure the safety pin behind one knot on the cording.

    • 6

Insert the safety pin in one corner of the casing. It does not matter which corner is the first.

    • 7

Slide the cording through the casing until it appears through the opposite end of the chosen side. Turn the sheet and insert the safety pin in the next casing opening. Repeat the process around the sheet, leaving a 12-inch tail at the beginning and end of the casing.
