A correctly-sized computer desk is easier on the back and neck.

If you spend long hours sitting at a computer desk at your office or home, it's important that the height of the desk be ergonomically correct. While it's not always possible to purchase the ideal desk, making sure the height of the desk is correct will benefit your posture. The right desk height will also help prevent painful back and neck problems. When shopping for a desk, a number of factors should be considered.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a store that offers a wide range of computer desks for sale. This way, you can try out and compare several different desks to find the one that's right for you. When shopping for a desk, keep in mind that most desks are approximately 30 inches in height.

    • 2

Sit on an office chair similar to your chair at home or work, if possible, and position it in front of a desk. Sit straight on the chair with your feet flat on the ground and measure the space between your knees and the desk. For comfort reasons, it's ideal to have at least a few inches of leeway so you don't bang your knees. Shorter individuals may prefer a lower desk, while taller people may need a higher one.

    • 3

Measure the height of your computer monitor and then measure that distance off the top of the desk. To maintain correct posture, your eyes should aim straight at the top of the monitor when you're sitting erectly.

    • 4

Gauge the overall size of the desk to determine whether it will suit your day-to-day needs. When sitting in front of a computer, your face should be between 18 and 30 inches from the screen. If the desk is too small to allow this or too large to make it practical, choose a different desk.

    • 5

Look to see if the computer desk is adjustable. Some desks can move up or down, while others have keyboard/mouse trays that can be set to the desired height. If you share the desk with others, it's important to choose an adjustable desk that is suitable for people of different heights.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't get the ideal desk, you can make the workstation suitable in other ways. For example, a chair that can be raised or lowered can adjust your position in front of the desk. You can also use a monitor that pivots up and down or place a monitor riser under the monitor to raise it to the correct level.

  • Sitting at an ergonomically unsound desk for an extended time can contribute to neck and back injuries and other repetitive motion injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
