How to Make a Chinstrap Beard

How to Make a Chinstrap Beard thumbnail
Abraham Lincoln was one famous owner of a chinstrap beard.

Famously worn by the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, the chin strap -- also known as a Donegal or chin curtain -- is at is most basic, a full beard with the mustache shaved off, running from the sideburns along the jawline. The benefits of a chinstrap beard, in addition to the presidential connection, are that it helps make long and skinny faces look wider and fully proportioned. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Grow your beard out until it is clearly more than stubble. This will make it easier to define the chinstrap.

    • 2

      Shave off your mustache.

    • 3

Shave your neck hair to just below the jawline.

    • 4

Shave your cheeks and the area just below your mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • When defining your chinstrap, leave a wider strip of beard than desired. It's easier to narrow it down later, than to fix it -- if you cut too much hair off.
