DIY Asymmetrical Tunic Out of Scarf

You can fashion a tunic out of scarves without using a pattern or contouring the fabric. Instead of fashioning a neckline and sleeves with additional fabric or complex needlework, you can leave strategically placed gaps in the seams along the edge of the garment to accommodate the arms and head. The project will initially yield an even tunic, but you can fold and stitch the hemline of the tunic into an asymmetrical shape.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 square scarves, 25 inches or 36 inches wide (both scarves must be the same size)
  • Tape measure
  • Straight pins
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one scarf face up on your work surface. Lay the other scarf face down, on top of the first scarf.

    • 2

Measure 9 inches toward the middle, from the the top left corner of the scarves. Mark the spot by inserting a straight pin vertically through both scarves to hold them together. Repeat the process on the right side.

    • 3

Insert more straight pins between the corners of the scarves and the 9-inch marking pins. The unpinned gap in the middle is the neck opening of the tunic.

    • 4

Measure 11 inches down from the top left corner of the scarves. Mark the spot by inserting a straight pin horizontally through both scarves. Repeat the process on the right side.

    • 5

Insert two more straight pins below the 11-inch marking pins on each side. Fold each bottom corner of the top scarf over, on top of the material. Arrange the folds so that the tunic tapers into a point. Pin the folded corners in place. Turn the scarf over. Repeat the folding and pinning process, to make an asymmetrical hem on the reverse side, if desired.

    • 6

Insert more straight pins down the side of the tunic, to finish securing the scarves together.

    • 7

Iron the folds at the hemline, to keep the garment flat as you sew it.

    • 8

Sew along the top edge of scarves. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Do not sew the unpinned gap in the middle of the scarves. Remove the straight pins as you sew past them.

    • 9

Sew down each side of the pinned scarves, beginning at the 11-inch marking pins and working down. Remove the pins as you sew past them.

    • 10

Sew along the ironed fold on each side of the point, to make the bottom hem. Leave a 1/2-inch hem between the edge of the fabric and the stitching. Trim the excess fabric (the original corners of the scarves) with scissors.

    • 11

Turn the tunic right side out.
