1
Adjust the thermostat so it is a degree or two cooler than usual, which can save you a significant amount on your heating bill. Replace your old thermostat with a newer version that you can set to automatically turn down the temperature by 10 degrees when you are away from home. The thermostat will return the temperature to normal just before you get back.

2
Use fans to circulate air in the summer as they don't require a lot of power and can blow warm hair out of a room. Don't forget to switch them off when you leave the room, however.

3
Turn down the temperature on the water heater to about 115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll save on your heating bill, and you won't notice much difference in the water.

4
Close your curtains during hot, sunny days in the summer. If you leave them open, the sun will heat up your living space and force your air conditioners to work extra hard.

5
Replace your old windows with more energy-efficient windows. It may cost you a little bit up front, but it can save you a lot by keeping outside air from leaking inside. You can also replace your old appliances and light bulbs with more energy-efficient options currently on the market.

Buy a radiator that uses oil to cut down on heating bills. The radiators can heat up a small area so that you don't have to resort of central heating. However, keep a close eye on radiators to reduce the risk of fire, and always turn them off when you leave a room.
