Pour or spray a 20 percent peroxide solution directly onto the hair before dyeing. This works as a pre-treater and will help to open up the hair's cuticle and make it easier for the dye to absorb. Leave on for up to 10 minutes before rinsing out with warm water. This product can be found at most beauty supply stores.

Mix the boxed dye contents. These usually contain the color and developer as well as an applicator bottle and gloves. Prepare the mix and apply to completely dry hair with gloved hands. Use a semi-permanent dye for less than 20 percent gray, or a permanent for hair with more than 50 percent gray. Since gray hair is so resistant to color, it may need to be left on as long as 45 minutes. Shampoo out.

Tips & Warnings
Wash hair every two to three days to avoid washing the color out. Also avoid the constant use of heating tools that dry the hair and cause damage.
Before dyeing your hair, do a patch test. Cut off a small strand of the darkest portion of your gray hair. Put it in a bowl and apply the dye to it. Wipe off the dye with a paper towel after 15 minutes to see if the dye has darkened or lightened to the desired color. If not, return to bowl and check every few minutes until hair has reached the desired shade. Do not get dye in your eyes, it will sting and potentially cause blindness. If this should happen, flush the eyes immediately with water. Do not mix with any other product or use on eyelashes or eyebrows. Do an allergy test as well to see if you are allergic to the product. Apply a small amount of the dye to the inside of your elbow and wait for 48 hours. If no irritation occurs, the dye is safe to use.
