DIY Hat Shaping

Handle the hat from the wire, not the material.

Hats are a classic addition to any wardrobe. As time goes on, hats, especially those with brims, can lose their shape. Rather than throwing out your old head gear or having it serviced to restore it, you can shape it back to a wearable state yourself. Handle your hat gently as you shape it and take your time so you do not cause permanent damage. Be careful not to overdo the misting and steaming steps to prevent ruining your hat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Cowboy Hats and Other Brimmed Hats

    • 1

Straighten out any kinks in the wire of the brim. For best results, flatten the wire completely for a fresh start.

    • 2

Hold the hat by the two sides of the brim. Grip the wire in the brim of the hat and slowly "roll" the sides in. Take your time on straw hats so you do not break the straw.

    • 3

Use a spray bottle and a hair dryer to reshape non-straw hats that have deep wrinkles or have been bent out of shape. Simply mist the hat with water, reshape and dry it with the hair dryer.

    • 4

Turn the hat so you are holding the front of the brim and the back, and adjust it as you wish. Remember to handle it by the wire so you don't damage the material.

    Felt Hats

    • 5

Shape felt hats, such as fedoras or cloche hats, by bending the felt with your hands. Make sure your hands are clean before working the felt.

    • 6

Steam your hat to remove stubborn folds and wrinkles. Use a pot of boiling water for a consistent amount of steam, and hold your hat over it. The hat should be easy to form.

    • 7

Set your hat on a mold or over a large can where it won't be misshapen or disturbed. Allow it to dry thoroughly before handling again.
