How to Make Yarn Hats With Flaps

Contrasting yarn is often used to create a stripe pattern or embellish the edges of the cap.

Crocheted winter caps with ear flaps are popular and practical cold-weather accessories. While some caps, such as the Peruvian chullo, are ornately knitted with multiple colors of yarn and intricate designs, the novice crocheter can create an attractive and functional cap using only a few ounces of yarn and a few basic stitches. This child-size cap is worked in rounds, beginning at the crown (top). After the body of the cap is completed, ear flaps are crocheted onto the cap. A chin strap or strings, tassels or pom poms may be added, if desired.
