How to Get Your Tutor License

A tutoring license will give you greater credibility as you seek new clients.

While tutoring children, teens and adults in various subjects requires patience and persistence, it does not require a license. Still, a license or state certification will give you greater credibility and assure prospective clients and tutoring centers that you have had professional training. It will set you apart from unlicensed tutors and enable you to land jobs unavailable to them.

Instructions

1. Contact colleges in your area and ask about courses or on-site training that can lead to becoming a licensed tutor. At-home classes and local training can also be found on the Internet but be sure to deal only with reputable and accredited organizations.

2. Complete the application at your chosen school or organization. During the application process, ask about any concerns you have regarding fees, curriculum or training. Shop around and make certain you have found a program suited to your needs before paying any required fees

3. Apply for a student loan if you are unable to pay for the tutoring course. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is an accredited program offering tuition assistance. There is no charge to apply and it is a relatively simple process. You may also apply for an education loan at a bank.

4. Review the required course work and make certain you have a through understanding of the curriculum before you begin. Some tutoring courses will include periodic exams to track your progress.

5. Make the commitment needed to complete the training course you have selected and work to improve your tutoring skills. Make certain you prepare for the final exam required to be issued a tutoring licensing or certification.
