How to Create a Fabric Monster
Designing a fabric monster is a creative way to begin a homemade collection of dolls. Creating your own vampire sock puppet monster, for instance, is ideal for saving the time and money associated with committing to purchasing a doll. Sock puppets remain an historic technique for making fabric monsters. First invented and developed in India during the eleventh century, according to Hobby Helper, sock puppets remain an ideal form of enjoyment and entertainment for the young and old alike. Remember, increase or reduce the level of scariness in the expression of your monster, depending on the age of your audience.

1
Fill a clean, black tube sock with cotton. Tightly close the opening of the sock. Tie the twisted piece into a knot. Sew the knot closed with a needle and thread.
-
2
Position the sock on a flat work surface so the knot is facing toward you. The knot represents the bottom of the body.

3
Trace an outline of a 3-inch-by-4-inch wing onto a piece of purple felt with standard chalk. Add sharp or wavy lines to the wing. Cut out the purple felt wing. Place the wing onto a second piece of purple felt. Trace the outline of the wing. Cut out the second wing along the outline. You now have two identical vampire wings.
-
4
Center and position a 1/2-inch of one wing behind the left side of the sock body. Bond the wing into place with fabric glue. Repeat with the second wing on the right side of the sock body.

5
Cut out four triangular fangs. Make two triangles 1-inch-by-1-inch and the other two 1/2-inch-by-1/2-inch. Aim the two 1-inch-by-1-inch fangs so the points are facing down. Position the fangs at just above center on the front side of the body. Bond the fangs into place with fabric glue.
-
6
Aim the two 1/2-inch-by-1/2-inch fangs so the points are facing up. Position the fangs at just below center on the front side of the body. Bond the fangs into place with fabric glue.
-
7
Cut four 1/4-inch-by-1/4-inch triangular pieces from red felt. Place one triangle atop the 1-inch-by-1-inch right side fang. Align the tip of the red triangle so it is flush with the 1-inch-by-1-inch right side fang. Bond the red triangle in place with fabric glue. The red triangles act as drops of blood. Repeat for the remaining three fangs.
-
8
Center the two wiggly eyes above the top two fangs. Bond the wiggly eyes to the body with fabric glue.
