1
Choose a common color scheme for both areas. Go with light colors, like an eggshell white. Apply this color everywhere, including on the table and chairs. Avoid painting the trim a different color, because this makes the space look broken up. The single, light color provides a unifying and expanding effect.
-
2
Put up a light faux brick tile on the wall. It'll give the wall a bit of texture without breaking up the space.
-
-
3
Lay down light-colored flooring. Choose light-colored ceramic tile instead of linoleum; it lasts longer than linoleum and is easier to clean.
-
4
Hang a mirrored backsplash behind your stove. The reflective quality of the mirrored tile or insert will make the room look bigger by reflecting the light that's already in the room.
-
5
Decorate upward. If your kitchen cabinets have space at the top, use this area to show off decorative items such as ceramic chickens, a collection of tin boxes or pie birds, decorative food inspired recipe card holders or dried floral arrangements. These small areas in the kitchen give you the opportunity to add a spot of color to the space.

6
Hang pots and pans from the ceiling. Hang a ceiling rack and hook your pots and pans to it with chains. Look for colored pots and pans. These not only add color, they also draw the eye upward, making the room look bigger.
-
7
Install tall cabinets if you have tall ceilings. Choose cabinets with glassed inlay in the doors. This allows you to show off your decorative china and bottles of fancy vinegars and oils, making them a part of your decor. Cupboards with an inlay of chicken wire work best for country-style kitchens.

8
Select a bench for your dining. It takes up less space by hugging the wall. If you must have chairs, choose chairs without arms. They're easier to maneuver in a small space and make the space look bigger.
