How to Convert Vertical Data to Horizontal Data in My Excel Tables

Setting up a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet can be a painstaking effort of getting the correct characters into the correct cells in the correct tables. Even after all of the information is input, you may want to see it rearranged. Instead of retyping everything, take advantage of Excel's transpose function. Although this feature is somewhat hidden away, it allows you to convert vertical data into horizontal rows in a single click.

Instructions

    • 1

Start Microsoft Excel. Click the "File" tab. Check the "Recent" link. If the spreadsheet with the vertical table columns is listed, click it. If not, click the "Open" link, navigate to the spreadsheet and double-click it to open it.

    • 2

Highlight the cells in the vertical table column to change to a horizontal view. Click the "Copy" button on the ribbon. The cells become surrounded with "marching ants."

    • 3

Click the cursor into the cell beginning the horizontal row for the new layout -- you do not have to highlight the exact number of cells in the row as there are in the table column.

    • 4

Click the small drop-down arrow below the "Paste" button on the ribbon.

    • 5

Click the "Transpose" button. The button is not labeled, but is the last button in the second row under Paste. The vertical data becomes horizontal.
