How to Use Vocoder in Fruity Loop
The Fruity Vocoder plug-in in Fruity Loops, or FL, Studio creates futuristic vocal effects. A vocoder combines a voice recording -- the "modulator" -- with a synthesized sound, or "carrier." The vocoder then "plays" the synthesized sound using the voice recording. To set up a basic vocoder effect in FL studio, you must load a vocal clip and a synthesizer into the program, then route the two audio sources into the Fruity Vocoder plug-in.

Click "File," then "New From Template." Select "Minimal" and click "Empty."

Open the "Channels" menu and click "Audio Clip." Click the "Audio Clip" button that appears, then click the folder icon in the window that opens. Double-click the audio clip that you want to vocode. Set the audio clip's Pan knob to its leftmost position; click and drag the FX field to "1."

Open the Channels menu again and click "3x Osc." Click the "3x Osc" button that appears. Click the square wave icons under Osc 1, Osc 2 and Osc 3. Turn the Pan knob all the way to the right; set the FX setting to "1."

Press "F9" to open the Mixer window. Click the channel labeled "Insert 1," then click the down arrow next to the "1" field. Select "Fruity Vocoder" from the menu that opens.

Right-click the "3x Osc" button, then click "Piano Roll" to open the piano roll editor window. Click inside the piano roll to enter the series of notes that you want to play with the vocoder. Click the first box in the pattern next to the audio clip.

Click the "Play" button to listen to the vocoder. Click and drag the vocoder's "Form" slider to adjust the vocoder's character. Use the "Max" and "Min" knobs to filter out low and high frequencies.
