You could become a grappling instructor.

Grappling consists of self-defense and mixed-martial arts techniques. Becoming a grappling instructor takes dedication toward learning and practicing various ground-oriented fighting systems. You can become a certified grappling instructor after approximately five years of continuous training.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate martial arts schools that offer grappling instruction. Check local university programs and your phone directory for clubs that teach grappling and wrestling techniques (see Resources). Visit martial schools that teach jiujitsu and judo--these arts provide grappling-based instruction.

    • 2

Participate in several trial classes before signing a contract for grappling lessons. Register for the program that features the type of grappling instruction that you're seeking.

    • 3

Attend classes to learn the techniques that are directed toward each belt level. Practice regularly to prepare for your rank test. During your rank test, a grappling instructor generally examines your application of joint locks, throws and wrestling movements. Successfully perform the required grappling techniques to earn a promotion to your next belt level.

    • 4

Inform your instructor of your desire to teach grappling. Inquire about becoming an assistant instructor after you have achieved an advanced belt ranking, such as a purple belt or a brown belt. Your instructor could oversee your teaching methods and offer advice as needed.

    • 5

Learn more advanced techniques and continue to train toward receiving your black belt.

Pass your black belt test and you'll have the basic credential to become a certified grappling instructor.
