How to Get Sponsored for Hockey

How to Get Sponsored for Hockey thumbnail
A sponsorship allows players to focus on their game instead of fundraising for equipment costs.

Playing sports on teams not run by a school can be very expensive. The cost of equipment, repairs, training, management and travel adds up quickly and can make it difficult to initiate and maintain a competitive team. In order to pay the costs associated with a sport such as hockey, your team may need to find a sponsor. A sponsor will pay some or all of the costs associated with your team in return for advertising on uniforms, equipment or in your local arena.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact local stores, banks and organizations in your area. Many are willing and able to support and sponsor local athletes as part of an advertising budget. Write to a regional or national office if the local manager is not authorized to make the decision; the manager will be able to provide a mailing address or e-mail.

Post a video of yourself on Youtube telling of your skills, why you are a good candidate and game footage of you playing. This provides a chance for possible sponsors to find you online and allows you to give a link to local businesses who may want to see your talent before approving sponsorship.

Join an online group designed to connect athletes with sponsors, such as UsportStar, Find a Sponsor or Sponsor Agent. These sites allow you to describe yourself and your goals and abilities; then you have the ability to browse through available sponsors. Sponsors also have the ability to search and browse athletes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be clear and concise about your skills, goals and what you have to offer the potential sponsor. Why should they sponsor you, and how will it help them? For example, if you are a great player and your team draws a substantial crowd, you will be providing a great advertisement for the company. Also be clear about what type of sponsorship you need. Do you need money for uniforms and equipment, or training camps, or to pay for travel and manager salary?
