How to Make Mardi Gras Props
Mardi Gras is a raucous celebration that runs each year in New Orleans and other cities along the Gulf Coast. People who ride on floats traditionally wear costumes, but it isn't uncommon to see people at parades or in bars wearing costumes as well. Make your own props to go along with your costume. For example Mardi Gras masks are a well-known part of the celebration, as well as umbrellas that are traditionally used in New Orleans' second line parades. Does this Spark an idea?

Mask

1
Draw a basic mask shape onto a piece of poster board. The mask should be wide enough to cover the face of the person who will be wearing it from temple to temple.
-
2
Cut the mask out of the poster board and cut out eye holes. Punch a hole in either side of it. Tie an elastic band inside each hole so that it will fit snugly on your head.

-
3
Choose sequins in an assortment of traditional Mardi Gras colors, such as green, purple and gold.
-
4
Warm up your hot glue gun and glue the sequins to the mask. Allow the hot glue to dry and harden completely before wearing the mask.
Umbrella
-
5
Choose a small, plain umbrella in the traditional Mardi Gras colors.
-
6
Use a hot glue gun to completely cover the top of the umbrella with feathers. Choose feathers in a variety of different colors or choose a color that will coordinate with the shade of your umbrella, as the underside of it will show.
-
7
Select tassels that coordinate with the color of the umbrella and the feathers. Hot glue a tassel to the end of each metal rod that creates the frame of the umbrella so that they dangle off of the sides.
