How to Make a Bird Puppet on a Stick

Make a bird puppet using basic craft materials.

When you have a child that enjoys putting on puppet shows, you may think that you need to spend a lot of money on premade cloth puppets. However, you can make simple puppets using a few basic craft materials that can be purchased at any arts supply store. For example, make a whimsical bird puppet using craft supplies that can be glued onto a simple craft stick. This enables you to make many bird puppets without spending a lot of money.

Things You'll Need

• Hot glue stick
• Hot glue gun
• Pom pom
• Craft stick
• Orange felt
• Scissors
• 2 googly eyes
• Colorful feathers

Instructions

1. Insert a hot glue stick into a hot glue gun, and plug the hot glue gun into a wall outlet to heat up for 10 minutes.

2. Squeeze a pea-sized dollop of hot glue onto a 1-inch wide pom pom, then press the glue-covered pom pom onto the end of a craft stick. Hold the pom pom in place for one minute so that the hot glue can cool and harden. This will be the head of the bird puppet.

3. Cut out a triangle from orange felt using scissors to measure 1/2-inch on all sides. Squeeze a tiny dot of hot glue onto one side of the triangle, then press the triangle onto the pom pom. This will be the beak of the bird puppet. Allow the glue to cool for one minute.

4. Squeeze a tiny dot of hot glue onto the back of a small googly eye, and press it onto the pom pom above the beak. Repeat to add on a second googly eye. Allow the hot glue to cool for one minute.

5. Squeeze hot glue along the craft stick, covering 2 inches of the stick with hot glue directly underneath the pom pom head.

6. Cover the glued area on the craft stick with colorful feathers. Allow the glue to cool for one minute before playing with the bird puppet.
