Garter stitch scarves allow new knitters to practice tension control.

A garter stitch scarf is an ideal first knitting project, and one advanced knitters can make quickly. If you need an instant-gratification project, one you can make while watching a movie, you can't beat a garter stitch scarf made with bulky yarn. Beginning knitters will find that garter stitch scarves allow them to practice tension control and making the knit stitch. After you finish a garter stitch scarf, you can move on to purling, at which point the knitting world becomes your oyster.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 10 stitches using whatever method you prefer. A long-tail cast on, also known as a slingshot cast on, will knit the first row for you.

    • 2

Knit every stitch in the next row. When you knit a stitch, pull it off the left needle and onto the right.

    • 3

Move the empty needle to your right hand and the full needle to your left hand after knitting all the stitches. The yarn coming off the skein should be hanging to the back of the first stitch on the left needle.

    • 4

Knit as many rows as necessary until the scarf is as long as you want.

    • 5

Bind off your stitches and cut the yarn. Pull the broken yarn through the last stitch on the needle to make a knot. Weave the tail across the bind-off edge using your fingers. If you knit tightly, use a darning needle and sew from back to the front with the first stitch and from front to the back with the next stitch. Continue in this manner until the entire tail is woven in.
