Some people choose to color their gray strands while others change their natural color for fun. Hair salons offer a variety of colors and options, or you can buy do-it-yourself dye kits at the store. If you are looking for a less expensive and more natural method, you can make your own hair dye from a spice like turmeric and apply it yourself. Hair dyes made from turmeric will turn your hair golden blonde and work best on lighter hair.

Fill the saucepan with 2 cups water. Place the saucepan on the stove and bring to a boil.

Measure 2 tbsp. ground turmeric, or 1/4 cup fresh turmeric. Add the spice to the boiling water and stir with a large spoon until all of the turmeric is dissolved.

Remove the saucepan from the stove; turn off the burner and allow the turmeric mixture to cool completely.

Pour the cooled turmeric mixture into a squeeze bottle. You can use one from a home hair dying kit or even a clean condiment squeeze bottle. Put the top on the squeeze bottle.

Place a towel around your neck to catch any dye drips.

Put on plastic gloves to protect your hands from the hair dye.

Bend your neck so that your head is over the kitchen or bathroom sink. You hair should fall forward with the roots at the back of your head fully exposed.

Squeeze a small amount of the hair dye onto the roots and the bottom of your hair. Work the dye into your hair with your hands. Continue to add more dye until your hair is completely covered. Work from the base of your neck out to the ends of your hair.

Comb through your hair. You can choose to do this standing up or still bent over the sink. Allow the dye to sit on your hair for 15 minutes.

Rinse your hair with water until it runs clear. Wash, dry and style your hair as usual.

Tip

Test the dye on a small section of your hair before applying to your entire head. Go through the entire dying process with the small section, ideally located near the back of your neck or in another less noticeable location. If you are not happy with the final color, adjust the dye by either adding more water if the color is too dark, or more turmeric if the color is too light.

Warning

Do not allow the dye to sit on your hair for more than 15 minutes. Doing so can leave your hair a bright yellow color.
