How to Troubleshoot Share on Skype

Skype's share feature allows you to instantly transfer audio and video files, as well as text and other documents, to your Skype contacts. Troubleshoot this share in order to solve problems that prevent you from sending files to other Skype users. There are several potential reasons for share errors, some of which have to do with your recipient's computer rather than your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your account, right-click the name of the user with whom you were trying to share and choose "Send File."

    • 2

Choose a different file than the one you were originally trying to send. If you were trying to share a music file, for example, choose a random text file. If this file transfers correctly, the problem is with the original file itself -- it may be corrupted. Skype doesn't limit the size of files you send, so size isn't an issue.

    • 3

Connect your computer to a different Internet connection if the file transfer works, but is slow. As is the case with any upload or download online, slow file transfers on Skype are the result of slow Internet connections.

    • 4

Close out of any other applications that might be slowing down your computer and affecting the transfer. For example, if you're watching a video in Windows Media Player or listening to a song in iTunes -- both high-memory usage applications -- this may affect the speed or success of your transfer.

    • 5

Temporarily turn off the Windows firewall, which may prevent you from transferring files via Skype. Choose "Control Panel" from the Windows "Start" menu, then select "System and Security" and "Windows Firewall." Click "Turn off Windows Firewall" and click "OK." Turn the firewall back on once the transfer is complete to protect your computer.

    • 6

Right-click the name of a different contact and attempt to send the file to him. If this is successful, the problem is on your original contact's end, not yours. Problems may include his Internet connection, his computer or his firewall.
