A DIY Satin Rolled Rosette

Ribbon rosette embellishments are a high-fashion accessory that adorn everything from headbands to dresses to shoes. You can make them at home with scrap ribbon and a little thread, and save yourself a lot of money in the process, by embellishing clothing and accessories yourself. By running a thread through the ribbon, you can roll the ribbon onto itself, forming a rolled rosette shape. Even novice crafters can embellish their wardrobes like pros, by executing this ribbon-shaping tip.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of satin ribbon. Twelve inches of ribbon yields a rosette 1 inch in diameter. Most rosette embellishments are 2 inches wide and require 24 inches of ribbon.

    • 2

Fold one end of the ribbon over on itself to create a 1/4-inch hem. This keeps the ribbon from coming off the wire as you push it down.

    • 3

Slide one side of the ribbon down the wire roughly 1/2 inch, exposing a piece of bare wire. The ribbon will bunch slightly.

    • 4

Grasp the exposed end of the wire. Push the ribbon down the wire causing it to bunch. Continue forcing the ribbon down to the folded end until it is bunched as tightly as possible. Only push the ribbon down one of the two wires. The edge of ribbon on the wire you are not holding will gather, too, but not as tightly.

    • 5

Trim the bare wire with scissors. Leave 1/4 inch of bare wire. Fold the 1/4 inch of wire over on the end of the ribbon, to keep the ribbon from slipping off.

    • 6

Roll the ribbon into a coil. Make the most compact side of ribbon the interior of the flower. Shape it with your fingers to create a rolled spiral shape. Shape the wire on the less-gathered side to resemble the wavy tips of rose petals.

    • 7

Thread the needle with 6 to 8 inches of thread. Stitch through the bottom of the rose to secure the rolled shape. Position the needle at the bottom of the rosette on the right side. Run the needle straight through the ribbon rosette in a horizontal line, catching each portion of the coil on the way. Stitch back through the rosette once or twice more, to secure it tightly.

    • 8

Tie off the thread and trim the excess.
