Always unplug the game controllers from the console when finished playing.

Many gamers enjoy spending hours conquering zombies or dueling against their friends in a friendly game of wrestling or basketball on their PlayStation or Nintendo game systems. Many also believe their game consoles will last forever, but they don't. Even though no gaming system lasts for eternity, there are ways to increase its lifespan.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the console when you are not using it. In addition to conserving electricity, it can also prolong the life of your device.

    • 2

Keep the console away from direct sunlight or extreme hot or cold environments, as these can damage the console's internal components and cause it to malfunction. Try to keep it at room temperature whenever possible.

    • 3

Take breaks after continuous game play, as the unit can overheat. If it feels hot after you touch the exterior portion of the console, stop playing it until it cools down.

    • 4

Store the console in its original box, if possible. If you need to transport the game system, placing it into the original box can help you avoid accidentally dropping it. You should also store it in the box when you are not going to use it for an extended period of time.

    • 5

Wipe your console with a soft, lint-free cloth if you see visible dirt or debris. Wipe the top, bottom, sides and the area underneath the system off gently. Do not use detergent, soap, alcohol or other types of abrasive cleaners. Water and chemicals can leak into the console's delicate internal system and cause extreme damage.

    • 6

Remove any discs or game cartridges from the unit when it's not in use. Store all discs and cartridges in their original cases. This helps maintain the life of the console and the games.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult your system's manufacturer before removing the warranty seal or sticker on your console, as this might void your existing warranty. Some companies will not fix repairs if the seal is broken or missing.
