How to Make a Beaded Hippy Headband
Whether you're making a hippie costume or simply want to add a Bohemian accent to your outfit, hippie accessories can help you get the look you want. One of the easiest ways to get this look is by making a beaded hippie headband. These headbands, which were popular among adolescents in the late 1960s and early 1970s, are an inexpensive way to change the "vibe" of your outfit. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Six one-inch strips of cloth at least one foot long
- Masking tape
- Measuring tape
- An assortment of beads (between six and twelve, to taste)
- Scissors

1
Take three cloth strands and stretch them out by pulling at each end. This will turn them into longer, narrower strips of fabric.
-
2
Knot the three strips together at one end. Tape this knot to the edge of a table with masking tape and braid the three strands by crossing one strand over the other. When you have a braid that is long enough to wrap around your head, measure it to be sure, and then make a knot at the other end.

3
Tie the two knots at the beginning and the end of your braid together to make the braid into a circle.
-
4
Stretch the remaining pieces of cloth. Decide how long you want the tails of the headband to be, and then trim the cloth to this length.
-
5
String the number of beads you desire onto each strand of your tail so that they are held up by the knot. Between two and four beads is best so that the headband does not get too heavy.
-
6
Make a knot at the end of each piece of stretched cloth after you have strung the beads onto the strands.
-
7
Tie the beaded strands onto the braided circle headband you made earlier. Drape the beaded strands so that you make a knot in the middle of them, around the headband; that is, each beaded strand should "double" by falling both inside and outside the headband.
