How to Create a Bed Canopy With Rings
Canopy beds can add a touch of romance or dreaminess to nearly any bedroom, whether the bed belongs to an adult, teenager or young child. Purchasing a new bed is not always necessary to have a canopy bed, as you can create your own using simple rings. Putting together your own bed canopy also gives you the freedom of taking it down later without having to purchase new furniture if you -- or your child -- grow tired of the canopy bed. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mark the spot on the ceiling where your screw eyes and rings will go with a pencil. One should be directly above the center of the bed, and two should go just outside of each corner of the bed. Measure 2 inches away from the bed and in from the corner of the bed to allow enough room for the fabric to hang down without falling directly on the bed.
-
2
Screw each of the screw eyes into the ceiling where you made pencil marks.

3
Attach the decorative rings to the screw eyes. Close the rings completely.
-
4
Measure the length and width of the bed, along with the distance from one corner to the corner diagonally across from it. Notate how far it is from the hooks to the floor as well. Multiply the measurement from the hook to the floor by two and add the first measurement. Add at least 40 inches to the diagonal measurements and at least 35 inches to the length and width measurements to allow for some slack in the fabric and a small pool of material on the ground.

5
Cut out long panels of the the fabric. There will be two pieces of material to span the width of the bed, two pieces for the length of the bed and four pieces to go diagonally across the bed. Lightweight material, such as tulle, organza or mosquito netting are the best options for this type of canopy because the material won't be too heavy for the rings. Choose a color that complements the colors, theme and style in the bedroom. Hem the edges of the fabric with a sewing machine if you want a finished look.
-
6
Run the fabric through the rings. The longest panels will go from one corner, through the center ring and through the corner diagonally across from the first one. In addition, run one panel through the corner above the headboard to the other corner above the headboard. Do the same on each side and at the foot of the bed. Each ring will have two pieces of fabric running through it when you're done and there will be four panels hanging down from each corner of the bed.
-
7
Puff the fabric out how you'd like it. For example, allow the fabric to sag between the rings to create swags or a true canopy feeling.
-
8
Gather the fabric at each corner of the bed and tie it with a ribbon or cord. Adjust the material to give you the look you want.
