How to Make Knitted Bookmarks
Combine your love of reading and knitting by making your own bookmark. Suitable for the most novice knitters, a bookmark is a quick knit that is ideal for using up any leftover yarn from other projects and can accommodate any stitch pattern you like. Make one for yourself or as a gift for other bookworms in your life.
Things You'll Need
- Fingering or lightweight yarn
- 3 mm or size 11 knitting needles
- Tapestry needle
- Satin ribbon (optional)
Instructions

1
With needles and yarn, cast on 13 stitches.
-
2
Knit 86 rows in the pattern of your choice. You can use garter stitch, knitting every row, stockinette stitch, alternating rows of knit and purl, or work a rib stitch by alternating between knit and purl stitches on a single row.

-
3
Bind off all stitches, leaving a 5-inch tail.
-
4
Thread the tail through a tapestry needle and weave in the ends.
-
5
Add optional ribbon detail by threading the ribbon through the needle and weaving through the bumps or V-shaped stitches of the left-hand edge of the bookmark. Repeat for the right-hand side. Tie the top two ends of the ribbons in a knot to secure in place or a tie a bow for a more decorative finish.
