1
Take the existing closet door off the frame. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinges. Pull the door and hinges off the frame. If the mechanism attaching the door to the closet is more complicated, you may need professional assistance.
-
2
Measure the height and width of the opening with a measuring tape. Obtain a tension rod that is appropriate for the width. Also, create or purchase a curtain panel that is at least an inch longer and wider than the opening. This is necessary for the curtain to hide the contents of your closet completely.

-
3
Hold the tension rod against the frame as high as you wish the curtains to hang. Use the manufacturer's instructions to adjust it to fit the width of the frame. Mark the position of the rod on each side of the frame with a pencil.
-
4
Remove the tension rod from the frame. Thread the rod through the pockets on the curtain.
-
5
Press one end of the tension rod toward the center to depress it. Place the tension rod on the door frame, on the spots you marked previously, and release it.
