How to Pack Stone for a Driveway

If you want a driveway that is long-lasting and free of cracks and potholes, you must first ensure you have a rock-solid base. Crushed stone is typically the base for asphalt or stone driveways because it will let water drain properly and is relatively inexpensive. You can not simply lay down stone and pour a driveway, however. With a gas-powered compactor, you can pack down the stone properly and set yourself up for a professional looking driveway. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare yourself for the job by wearing protective glasses, ear protection, steel-toe boots, long pants and work gloves.

    • 2

Lift the compactor with a friend and carefully set it down onto the recently placed stone. Do not drag the compactor to the starting position, as doing so will leave marks on the surface.

    • 3

Flip the switch of the compactor to the "On" position.

    • 4

Slide the gas lever to the "On" position.

    • 5

Slide the choke to the "On" position.

    • 6

Set the throttle to the minimum setting.

    • 7

Pull the cord to start the engine, then allow the engine to idle for approximately 15 seconds.

    • 8

      Release the choke lever.

    • 9

Hold the two handles on the compactor firmly and start to walk it over the outside edge of the stone. Work the compactor from the outside to the inside of the space, working in a sort of spiral. You can increase the speed of the compactor by adjusting the throttle lever. Be careful to slowly increase the speed so that you are always comfortable and in control.
