How to Select a Tuxedo

A tuxedo adds a touch of class to a formal occasion.

Selecting the right tuxedo can be a challenge. Many styles and accessories are available that allow for a choice that is traditional, trendy or somewhere in between. Several different jacket lapel types, pant types and accessories offer the opportunity to customize your look. Because of the many options to choose from, it's wise to work with the staff at a formal attire store to ensure you get the proper fit and desired look.

Instructions

1. Focus on the look that is appropriate for the setting. Settle on the specific colors and accessories, such as a handkerchief, which can add polish to your look.

2. Identify your body type. Camouflage a wide waist or add fullness to a thin body with a double-breasted jacket. A single-button jacket is more flattering on shorter men, while taller men look good in two-buttoned jackets.

3. Pick a four, five or six button jacket, which will cover the majority of your vest, if you decide on a trendier look. Pair the coat with a wild patterned vest. Wear a decorative button cover instead of a black tie, adding baggy pants and black shoes with a white-capped toe.

4. Select a single or double-breasted black tuxedo jacket with a notch or peak lapel, if you want a traditional look. Pair the coat with a vest in a toned-down color. Add a white cummerbund for an even more traditional look. Include a black bow tie and side-stripe pants.

5. Pick a notch or peak lapel tuxedo coat and pair it with a bright, patterned vest or combine a high-buttoned coat with a subdued color vest and traditional pants. These styles create a look that falls between trendy and traditional.

6. Try on several tuxedos, including the intended shoes, and examine them in front of a mirror. The bottom of the jacket should be even with your fingertips, with 1 inch of the shirt cuff showing when your arms are resting at your side. Walk around to check the comfort of the jacket and pants.

Tips & Warnings

• The staff at the store will help you determine the right fit, style and shoes for your particular need. Tuxedos can be altered, if needed.

• Consider a custom made tuxedo in a timeless style if you are purchasing the tux. The timeless, traditional look is always appropriate.

• Avoid cummerbunds if your body is stocky, since they tend to accentuate the middle body section. Steer clear of cummerbunds if you are short, because they break the line of the torso. An unbroken look tends create a sense of height.
