How to Teach Toddlers the Dangers of Running Toward or in the Street
Developing safe street habits when your child is young will help her understand the dangers later in life. From the time your toddler can walk, she will be exploring the world. If you aren't there to guide her, she can come face-to-face with some of its dangers. Streets are one of the most unsafe areas for your child, so some basic understanding is needed almost immediately. According to the Family Education website, kids shouldn't cross the street by themselves until they are 10 years old, and some should wait longer. Running toward or in the street is another no-no.

1
Tell you child never to play in the street or on your driveway. Emphasize that he shouldn't retrieve any toys from the street. Tell him to ask you to get the toy.
-
2
Walk the toddler to the curb while holding her hand. Tell her never to go beyond the curb by herself. Say that the street is only for cars.

3
Hold his hand and walk him to the curb. Stop and ask him to look both ways with you before crossing the street. Tell him to never cross the street unless he is holding your hand.
-
4
Explain that even when crossing with you, she should never run. Tell her to be calm and walk on pace with you.
-
5
As you wait to cross the street, tell your child what you see. For example, tell him about a car that is approaching, or a school bus that is turning onto your street. This will make him more away of the dangers around him.
