How to Make & Do Cool Things With Plasma Orbs

Plasma orbs are fun novelty items well known for their colorful displays. Plasma orbs, also known as plasma globes or plasma balls, work by conducting electricity through gases inside the glass ball. There are many different types of gas, such as neon and argon, which provide the colorful special effects. One of the best known features of a plasma orb is that the colorful lines of energy are attracted to your fingers if you touch the glass casing. You can do cool tricks with a plasma ball.

Instructions

  1. Business Card Trick

    • 1

Turn on the plasma orb and place a copper coin, such as a quarter (which is about 92 percent copper), on the top of the glass case. On top of this, place any business card.

    • 2

Take the paperclip and bend the outer end of it downwards, forming a 90-degree angle.

    • 3

Hold the paperclip over the business card where it is over the quarter. Keep it at a distance of an 1/8-1/4 inch. You should see a scintillating arc of electricity between the coin and the end of the paperclip, slowly burning a hole in the middle of the business card between them.

    • 4

Obtain a fluorescent light bulb, such as a neon strip light bulb.

    • 5

Move the light bulb closer to the plasma orb. Move it gradually and watch as the bulb starts to light up.

    • 6

Try this trick with different fluorescent light bulbs of different colors to get a wide variety of effects.
