How to Find Out the Humidity in Your Home

Indoor humidity control of your home is vital. Humidity that is too high gives you a damp, sticky feeling and contributes to mold growth in unventilated areas. Low humidity causes dry skin and dryness in your nose and throat. The humidity level can be controlled, but you have to first know the current humidity level to know how much you should lower or raise it. Do this with a hand-held device called a hygrometer. It measures the house's relative humidity, the ratio of moisture in the air, compared to how much moisture the air can hold at certain temperatures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn a digital hygrometer on and place the hygrometer the room in which you want to find out the humidity. Avoid spots where the hygrometer is exposed to direct heat, such as near radiators and chimneys.

    • 2

Wait the necessary amount of time, prescribed by your specific hygrometer's owner's manual, for the device to properly measure the temperature and humidity levels.

    • 3

Check the humidity reading on the hygrometer. Place the hygrometer in any additional rooms you want to check and follow the same process. Follow the manufacturer's instructions; some digital hygrometers allow you to store readings for later viewing and measurement.
