How to Make a Very Wide Friendship Bracelet

A typical embroidery floss friendship bracelet is between five and eight strands long. There is no right or specific length that is considered to be "very wide." For example, to someone who prefers and normally makes bracelets that are five strings wide, 10 can be "very wide." For those who make eight strands normally, 16 could be "very wide," and so on. The wider you make the bracelet, the longer it will take to finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the colors of embroidery thread that you want in your friendship bracelet and decide how many strands across you want it to be. Make it an even number. Later, you could run into inconveniences with managing the lengths of the thread if you choose an odd number.

    • 2

Obtain one entire skein of embroidery floss for each two sets of color that you want. For example, if you want two strands of blue, then get one skein. If you want four strands of blue in the bracelet, get two skeins.

    • 3

Lay out the skeins in the color order that you want them to appear in. Unfold each skein of floss fully into the full length. Fold all of the skeins in half and tie a knot 6 inches from the top of the fold to form a loop.

    • 4

Fasten a safety pin through the top knot and attach the safety pin to a pillow.

    • 5

Grab the first two strands of floss. Hold the second strand tight with one hand while draping the first strand over the second to form a "hole." Wrap the first strand behind the second one and up through the "hole" and pull to form a tight knot right next to the top knot.

    • 6

Grab the next strand in line and hold it tight while taking the first strand that you just knotted and repeat this procedure. Work through the rest of the strands, taking the same strand that you knotted, working from left to right.

    • 7

Push up the line of bumps close to the top knot when you finish the first row. Continue this pattern with each additional row, starting with the next strand in line. When you reach your desired length, tie a knot at the bottom of the group of strands like you did at the top and cut the remaining floss approximately 6 inches below the bottom knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider cutting out strips of cardboard or use a small pencil or pen to wrap each strand of thread around to help manage the lengths of the threads as you work. Don't worry about making a mistake on which string goes where or if you get a knot too low on the string. By the time you finish, you'll barely notice the flaw and the change up in string layers looks like it was supposed to be on purpose.

  • Tying the knots too tight will cause the bracelet to curve over itself. If the bracelet will curve over, regardless of how tight you pull the knot or how loose you leave it, place scotch tape just over the last row you create.
