How to Make Earrings From Sewing Buttons
Turn an extra pair of buttons into a cute pair of stud earrings. For a funky look, use two contrasting buttons, such as a button in brown and a button in light tan or a large button and a small button. Use fabric covered sewing buttons or purchase a kit to make your own buttons with your choice of fabric. You can also use standard, four-hole, plastic buttons to make the earrings.
Things You'll Need
- 2 buttons or button-making set
- Pliers
- Small scrap of cotton fabric

1
Use the pliers to pull the small metal loop off of the back of the fabric-covered button. If you're using plastic buttons to make the earrings, you don't have to worry about removing the loop.
-
2
Draw a circle that is slightly larger than the button backing on the tracing paper with the pencil. Use the button as a guide and trace around it. If you're using a kit, it may have come with a pattern, so you will not need to draw your own.

3
Cut out the pattern with the scissors. Place the pattern on the fabric and trace around it, then cut out the traced shape with the scissors. Repeat, so that you have two pieces of fabric. Skip steps 3 through 5, if you are using pre-made fabric buttons or plastic buttons.
-
4
Lay each piece of fabric on your work surface, right side down. Center the top of each button on the top of the fabric. Fold the edges of the fabric over the button and tuck into the backside of the button.
-
5
Set the back of each button on top of the fabric tucked into the button and push it into place using the button-making tool that came with the kit or using your thumb. Push as hard as you can, to secure the back of the button to the top part.
-
6
Apply a dot of hot glue or epoxy to the earring backings, then press each backing onto the backside of the buttons. Let them dry for an hour or so, before trying on the earrings.

Tips & Warnings
Don't use buttons that are very large, as they will make the earrings heavy and uncomfortable to wear.
