How to Make an Origami Rosebud

Use colored paper to make different colored rosebuds.

Rosebuds are included in flower bouquets instead of opened roses. That way, the flowers will open and the bouquet will last longer. If you want to make an origami rose bouquet, you will need several rosebuds. Origami rosebuds require a single sheet of paper for each rose. The rosebuds are open at the bottom for stems and leaves. Gather up the rosebuds into a bouquet and give them as a gift. The rosebud is a beginner origami design, but it does have a couple of tricky folds.

Instructions

1. Turn the square paper so it is a diamond shape. Fold the diamond in half vertically and then unfold. Fold the diamond in half horizontally and then unfold.

2. Fold the right tip of the diamond so it meets the middle. Repeat with the other three tips.

3. Flip the diamond over and fold the top tip down to meet the bottom tip. You now have an upside down triangle shape.

4. Fold the right tip of the triangle down to meet the bottom tip. This makes a small triangle that is pointing to the right. Fold the small triangle in half vertically so that the bottom tip meets the top tip.

5. Flip the paper over and repeat Step 4. The result is a small diamond shape.

6. Fold the bottom tip of the diamond up to meet the top tip, but only fold the top layer. Flip the paper over and repeat. You will have a triangle shape.

7. Fold the right tip so that it touches the middle of the right edge and then unfold. Repeat by folding the tip to the back and then unfold.

8. Slip your pointer finger between the first and middle flap inside the triangle. Place your thumb below the right tip and press up. The tip will fold inside along the creases.

9. Flip the triangle over and repeat Step 7.

10. Place your fingers inside the bottom to open the rosebud. Press in on the right and left sides to help hold the rosebud open.

11. Fold back the tips of the two triangles. Fold back the tips of the next inner triangles. Fold down the very tips of the center triangle.

Tips & Warnings

• Turn the rosebud into a rose by folding the tips of triangles down more and pushing the inner triangle down into the flower. Use larger square paper, at least 8 inches, to make the rose. It is harder to fold the rose with smaller paper, but use any size paper for the rosebud.

• Make origami stems for the rosebuds, or make them out of pipe cleaners.

• Be careful when folding down the very center tips of the rosebud. The tips will not fold down very far and will tear if you try. Fold down just the very tip.
