The simplest crochet stitches can create a warm adult hat.

Hats are a necessity in the northern part of the country in the winter. Cold winds and below zero temperatures can cause serious health problems if you're not dressed warm enough. This starts with covering your head. Beginning crocheters can create a simple adult hat from one skein of yarn in any color. This simple design only uses chain stitch and single crochet, so this hat is useful as a first crochet project.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 skein worsted weight yarn
  • Size H crochet hook
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop in the end of a strand of yarn. Push a size H hook through the loop. Chain stitch until the chain measures 14 inches long.

    • 2

Turn the work and make a single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet all the way across until you reach the end of the row. Chain one and turn the work.

    • 3

Measure loosely around your head at eyebrow height. Single crochet rows until the work measures this length. Clip off the yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail, and pull the yarn through the last stitch to secure the work.

    • 4

Cut a piece of yarn 18 inches long. Thread a yarn needle with the yarn. Place the first row and the last row of the crocheted work together and sew them using the yarn needle and strand of yarn. You now have a crocheted tube.

    • 5

Thread the tail you left after crocheting into the yarn needle. Weave the needle in and out of the stitching on one end of the tube. Pull the yarn tight when you have woven it all around the outside of the tube edge. Gather the crocheting together where you've pulled the yarn to create the top of the hat. Tie off the yarn into a secure knot.

    • 6

Weave the loose yarn ends into the stitching to hide them. Roll up the bottom 3 inches to form a rolled brim on the hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a striped hat by changing yarn colors every four or six rows.

  • Adjust for a very small or large head by crocheting more or fewer chains. The original chain should measure from the top of your head down to your ear lobes, plus 4 inches.
