Origami is the art of folding paper. Make an Origami bow tie to complete an entire Origami outfit, or turn a bill into a bow tie to leave your waiter a special tip. All you need is a little patience to fold your piece of fashion art.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the rectangle in half, then unfold to find a crease running horizontally across the middle.

    • 2

Fold each corner of the rectangle to lay against the crease that runs across the middle. You now have a rectangular shape with diamond points on both sides. The crease still runs horizontally across the middle.

    • 3

Pull the top of the paper to meet the horizontal middle crease. Fold. Repeat the process with the bottom of the paper, bringing it up to meet the middle crease, and fold. You now have the same rectangular shape with diamond edges, but it is narrower.

    • 4

Fold the paper in half, bringing the right side over to meet the left side. The result will be a middle crease that runs straight up and down if you unfold the paper, but don't.

    • 5

Rotate the paper 90 degrees so its pointed end is directed up and away from you, and the flat end is at the bottom. Fold the two corners at the bottom to be flush with the middle crease so they resemble the top, pointed end of the paper exactly.

    • 6

Unfold the bottom corners back to their original square form, then unfold the paper again into the narrow, rectangular shape with two pointed ends. Now there is one end pointing away from you, one pointing toward you, a horizontal crease running through the middle, and an "X" crease running through it.

    • 7

Turn the paper over so you can see the folded sections. Notice the diamond shapes at the top and bottom. Gently fold these in half to create two lightly creased triangles on top and two on bottom. Open them back up and notice the slight creases.

    • 8

Pull the corners on both sides of the horizontal middle crease in and down to touch each other at their points. You will now have two connected pseudo-diamond shapes, the smaller one on the bottom.

    • 9

Turn the paper over so you can't see the folds. Draw an imaginary line across the bottom of the top diamond, creating a square bottom and cutting off its triangular bottom, then fold it there. You're actually bringing the top point down to meet the bottom point exactly.

    • 10

Fold the two corners of the square top in so they resemble the bottom point. You'll be left with another diamond shape. Rotate the paper 90 degrees so the pointed ends are sticking out to the left and right.

    • 11

Fold the shape in half by bringing the left point over to the right point to match exactly. Hold the paper up so the edge you just folded is down in the palm of your hand and the points are sticking up.

    • 12

Notice the two triangular flaps that stick out to the sides when you hold the paper up. Pull the left flap out to the left and the right flap out to the right. You now have what closely resembles a bow tie, with a center that sticks up toward you.

    • 13

Push the center down to create a square attachment between the two bow tie sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create your starting rectangle by folding a perfect square in half then cutting along the crease.
