How to Make Sand Sculptures Not at the Beach
Creating sand sculptures isn't an activity just for the beach. All you need is some type of container that can hold the small grains, like a sandbox. Anyone who has spent time in sand knows that the tiny grains find their way into every small crevice. This makes this activity more suited for outside rather than in a house or classroom. The type of sand sculpture made is up to the creator. Castles, for example, are a common type of sculpture.

1
Wet the sand in the sandbox with water. Pour enough water into the sandbox to moisten the sand, but not to create standing water puddles. Wait five minutes for the water to soak into the sand.

2
Flatten the sand in the area where the sand sculpture will sit with the putty knife.

Form the sand sculpture. Fill the molds or buckets with sand. Slide one hand underneath the mold or bucket. Spread the other one over the opening of the mold or bucket. Quickly flip the mold or bucket onto the area where you want the sand to sit. Slowly remove the mold or bucket. Do not bang or push on the bucket. If a large amount of the sand sticks in the bucket, push the sand you dumped out off the base and retry. Smooth out the sand and gently press any falling pieces back into place. Continue doing this until the sand sculpture is the basic shape wanted. You can also form some of the parts with your hands. For example, if you make an dragon, form the tail by arranging the sand with your hands.

Mist the sand with a water-filled spray bottle. Smooth out the sides with the putty knife and your hands. Use the various tools to carve designs into the sand. For example, scoop rounded windows out of the sand with the spoon. Use pointed carving tools to etch designs.
